Neurons are the primary signaling units of the nervous system and can be classified according to their function, structure, axonal projection length, and dendritic geometry.
Based on the direction in which impulses are conducted relative to the Central Nervous System (CNS):
Sensory (Afferent) Neurons:
Conduct nerve impulses from sensory receptors in the skin, joints, muscle, or viscera into the CNS.
Cell bodies reside outside the CNS in the dorsal root ganglia or cranial nerve ganglia.
Motor (Efferent) Neurons:
Transmit nerve impulses out of the CNS to effector organs (muscles or glands).
Somatic Motor Neurons: Innervate skeletal muscles to produce voluntary and reflex movements.
Autonomic Motor Neurons: Innervate involuntary effectors (cardiac muscle, smooth muscle, and glands). They consist of two-neuron chains (preganglionic and postganglionic) divided into sympathetic, parasympathetic, and enteric systems.
Interneurons (Association / Intrinsic Neurons):
Located entirely within the CNS.
Account for the vast majority of neurons; they process, integrate, and associate sensory input to determine motor output.
Based on the number of processes (extensions) emanating from the cell body (soma):
Pseudounipolar Neurons:
Have a single short process extending from the cell body that divides in a T-like manner into two long branches.
The peripheral branch extends to sensory receptors, while the central branch enters the CNS.
Example: Primary sensory neurons in the dorsal root ganglia.
Bipolar Neurons:
Have two distinct processes extending from opposite ends of the elongated cell body (one dendrite and one axon).
Example: Retinal bipolar cells, olfactory receptor neurons, and auditory/vestibular neurons.
Multipolar Neurons:
Possess multiple dendrites and a single long axon arising from the cell body.
Example: Motor neurons, spinal interneurons, and cortical pyramidal cells.
Based on the length and reach of the axon:
Golgi Type I (Projection / Principal Neurons):
Neurons with long axons that extend out of their local region to project to distant parts of the brain or spinal cord.
Example: Pyramidal cells in the motor cortex projecting down to the spinal cord.
Golgi Type II (Intrinsic Neurons / Interneurons):
Neurons with short axons that remain confined to a local neural circuit.
Some lack a conventional axon entirely (anaxonal neurons, such as retinal amacrine cells).
Pyramidal Cells: Pyramid-shaped dendritic arborization; typically covered in dendritic spines (spiny).
Stellate Cells: Star-like radial dendritic arrangement; can be either spiny or aspiny.
Neurons can also be defined according to the type of information transmitted [401–403]:
Direction: Afferent (sensory) vs. Efferent (motor).
Anatomical Distribution: Somatic (skin, skeletal muscle) vs. Visceral (internal organs).
Embryological Origin: General vs. Special (e.g., Special Visceral Efferent for branchial arch-derived muscles).
